Thailand currently has approximately 1,018 active mines, categorized by region as follows:
• Central Region: 462 mines
• Northern Region: 369 mines
• Northeastern Region: 187 mines
These operating mines cover a wide range of mineral resources such as limestone, gypsum, coal, gold, and potash.
Examples of significant mines in Thailand:
- Chatree Gold Mine (Phichit Province) – Operated by Akara Resources Public Company Limited, a subsidiary of Kingsgate Consolidated Limited from Australia. This mine was previously ordered to close in 2016 but was granted four new mining leases in 2021 and has since resumed operations.
- Udon Thani Potash Mine (Udon Thani Province) – Operated by Asia Pacific Potash Corporation Limited (APPC). The project was granted a mining license and began operations in 2022.
- Doi Pha Daeng Zinc Mine (Tak Province) – Known as one of the largest zinc sources in Southeast Asia. However, mining activities in this area have previously caused cadmium contamination in the Mae Tao River Basin, adversely affecting the health of local communities.
To address these issues, the government has promoted the concept of “Green Mining”, which emphasizes environmentally friendly and socially responsible mining practices.
