Why has this year been so long? What has happened to Thailand?

Why has Thailand experienced a longer cold season this year? Experts have revealed the reasons.

Thailand, known for having three seasons: hot, very hot, and extremely hot, has been facing unusually cold weather in many provinces this year. Since November 2024, the Thailand Meteorological Department announced the start of winter, and the cold weather has persisted.

This has left many people puzzled and questioning the unusual occurrence. Yologreennews has compiled the main reasons behind this extended cold spell:

1. Global temperatures have risen by more than 1.5°C
When global temperatures increase, it causes significant changes that impact the planet. One of the most noticeable effects is “extreme weather changes,” which can be felt by humans. China, for instance, has been heavily affected, experiencing its coldest temperatures in 30 years, with temperatures dropping to -53°C.

2. The Polar Vortex phenomenon
The Polar Vortex is a phenomenon where cold air masses surround the poles (the Arctic and Antarctic), keeping cold air isolated from warmer air. As global temperatures rise, warm air masses move toward the north, pushing the cold air masses and causing them to spread out. This results in a shift in the direction of the cold air flow, allowing the cold air that was previously contained to spread further south, affecting China and making the country even colder.

3. Thailand is influenced by high-pressure systems from China
When China experiences strong high-pressure systems with high density, they expand and cover Thailand and neighboring countries. This has caused Thailand to experience longer and colder weather this year. Along with the cold, the high-pressure system also contributes to increased air pollution, especially PM2.5 levels, which need to be addressed urgently as the year begins.
