Scientists were stunned to discover a “carpet of sharks” underwater off southern Australia.
Researchers from the University of Tasmania couldn’t believe their eyes when an underwater robot captured incredible footage of thousands of Port Jackson sharks lying closely together on the seafloor at Beagle Marine Park.
And the most surprising part?
Every single shark was female!
“It looked like a carpet of sharks spread across the seafloor,”
– said Dr. Jacquomo Monk, lead researcher.
But the mystery remains:
Why were only females gathered?
Why were they all sleeping in such a massive group?
Here are some possible explanations scientists are exploring:
✅ For safety in numbers
✅ Resting before mating season
✅ Taking advantage of ideal seafloor conditions
✅ Seasonal aggregation behavior
✅ Response to changing marine environments
The expedition was led by the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS),
with support from the National Environmental Science Program (NESP) of the Australian Government.
