Swiss Village of Blatten Partially Destroyed After Birch Glacier Collapse

The village of Blatten in Switzerland has been partially destroyed after the Birch Glacier collapsed, sending massive ice and debris into the settlement. Although residents had been ordered to evacuate several days earlier due to fears the glacier might break apart, one person remains missing and numerous homes have been reduced to rubble.

Climate Change Behind the Disaster

Experts attribute the collapse to climate change, which is causing glaciers to melt at unprecedented rates and thawing the permafrost that helps anchor mountain slopes. The loss of this natural stability has led to more frequent landslides and flooding.

A recent report warns that all glaciers in Switzerland could vanish within the next century unless the global average temperature increase is kept below 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels, as outlined in the Paris Climate Accord agreed upon by over 200 nations a decade ago.

However, global temperatures have exceeded the 1.5°C threshold in 21 of the past 22 months, leading many scientists to believe the target is already out of reach. This suggests that glacier melt will continue to accelerate, making disasters like this more frequent in the future.
