Seabin is an innovation aimed at restoring the beauty of the ocean — a solution to the growing marine waste problem, which poses a major threat to marine ecosystems, including marine animals and coral reefs. This waste causes pollution and often takes a long time to decompose.
A Seabin is a device designed to collect floating debris from the surface of water in enclosed areas such as harbors, marinas, and canals. It looks like a floating trash bin and works by using a water pump to draw water into the bin, where a filter collects trash such as plastic bags, microplastics, and even small amounts of oil.
The Seabin was invented by two Australian surfers, Pete Ceglinski and Andrew Turton, who were tired of seeing garbage floating in the ocean. Motivated to make a real difference, they co-founded a startup to create a practical and effective innovation to help the planet.
This ocean-cleaning bin floats on the water surface and is designed not to harm marine life — guaranteeing no sea creatures are trapped inside. However, Seabins are not suitable for open seas with strong waves. Instead, they are ideal for high-traffic coastal areas, like marinas, where pollution is most concentrated.
Today, the Seabin is considered a successful innovation and has gained popularity in Australia. In 2020 alone, Seabins helped remove over 90 tonnes of marine waste, and by 2022, they had collected 7,300 pounds (about 3.3 tonnes) of debris. Most recently, Seabins have been deployed in the United States, specifically in Marina Del Rey, California.
