Mount Fuji is at risk of erupting! Experts advise preparing for volcanic ash.

The Japanese government prepares for the potential eruption of Mount Fuji, revealing 4 stages of emergency measures to avoid panic, recommending staying home if the volcanic ash does not exceed 30 cm.

On March 24, 2025, The Economic Times reported that a group of Japanese government experts has published new guidelines to prepare the people of Japan to prepare for the “Mount Fuji eruption” if this event occurs. Tokyo residents and those living nearby should stay in their residences to prevent chaos.

As we all know, Mount Fuji is one of the beautiful tourist attractions and is considered another symbol of Japan. However, Mount Fuji is another volcano that has the potential to erupt again. The last time it erupted was 300 years ago and has remained dormant since then.

Although Mount Fuji has been dormant for a long time, with the current global climate change, the risk of another eruption or explosion is very high. The Japanese government has therefore announced new emergency measures to prepare for the “Mount Fuji eruption”, which is considered a disaster that could severely impact the country’s capital.

The new emergency guidelines are divided into 4 stages:

  1. Stage 1: 3 cm of ash falls. Stay home and avoid outdoor activities.
  2. Stage 2-3: If the ash falls to 3-29 cm, prepare and monitor closely.
  3. Stage 4: 30 cm of ash falls. Public services such as electricity, water, and mobile phone

signals may be disrupted. Experts recommend that people prepare more emergency supplies than usual. Tokyo residents generally stock up on a week’s worth of supplies in the event of a major earthquake.

The experts also suggested that the Japanese government find a place to immediately remove the ash, which can be used as construction materials. In addition, before the actual event, the public should be educated about the possible impacts and trained on how to cope with a volcanic eruption.

For tourists traveling to Japan during this time, there is no need to worry too much, but they should still follow the news and prepare necessary items for peace of mind throughout the trip.
