Many climate scientists agree that the internationally agreed goal of keeping global temperatures below 1.5 degrees Celsius in the Paris Agreement is unlikely to be achieved, even if world leaders come together to negotiate at COP29.
Researchers who monitor global temperatures now say that 2024 is on track to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius, which would be the hottest year on record. But even if it does, the world won’t be catastrophic.
But it would violate the Paris Agreement, which is almost void because it is almost impossible to achieve. What has happened is that the world has been too slow to take the necessary actions. We are seeing the amount of fuel that should have been decreasing, but has actually increased.
