Kwang Sirisillp Chotivichit, better known as Kwang AB Normal, recently took to Facebook to issue a heartfelt warning to new scuba divers, following a viral clip showing a conservationist removing a fish trap from a coral reef.
In his post, Kwang emphasized that while the act may have been well-intentioned, it involved several critical risks and ethical concerns that beginner divers should be aware of:
- Respect Local Livelihoods
Fish traps are personal property used by local fishermen to earn a living. Regardless of conservation intentions, tampering with, moving, or cutting these traps is not only inappropriate—it can also harm the local community. - Avoid Overexertion Underwater
Excessive physical effort underwater can lead to hypercapnia—a condition where carbon dioxide builds up in the body. This can cause serious symptoms and health risks, making it extremely dangerous while diving. - Lifting Heavy Objects Requires Proper Equipment
Removing heavy objects from underwater—such as fish traps—should only be done using the correct tools, like a lift bag, which is taught in Rescue Diver courses. Doing so improperly may cause:- Uncontrolled ascent (which is dangerous)
- Dropping items on delicate reef structures
- Entanglement of nets with diving equipment
“Conservation is a good thing, but it must be done properly and safely,” Kwang wrote, adding a gentle reminder to his fellow divers, especially students and scuba friends.
He concluded his message with care and concern, signing off as “Teacher Kwang.”
