Heating for just 5 minutes… you might unknowingly ingest “hundreds of thousands of pieces of plastic”.

Greenpeace has warned that “microwave-safe plastic containers” may release microplastics and nanoplastics into food when exposed to heat — especially if the containers are old, scratched, or worn out.

Research has found that heating food in plastic containers for just five minutes can release hundreds of thousands of plastic particles per meal, significantly more than other heating methods.

Importantly, the term “Microwave Safe” does not mean the container is free from chemical or plastic contamination. It only indicates that the container will not melt or become deformed under microwave heat.
