Between 1835 and 2011, humans built more than 6,862 dams worldwide. The massive weight of the water stored in these reservoirs has caused Earth’s axis (the North Pole) to shift over one meter from its original position.
Scientists explain that the enormous mass of trapped water presses down on the Earth’s crust, altering its balance and slightly changing the planet’s rotation path.
This finding highlights how human engineering projects can have planetary-scale impacts, extending far beyond their intended local and economic benefits.
