Giraffes are facing extinction! Due to global warming and human hunting.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed classifying giraffe species under the category of ‘endangered’ or ‘threatened’ animals, which has shocked the world, as giraffes are still commonly seen in zoos.
One of the reasons that giraffes are nearing extinction is the increasingly severe climate change, but this is not the only factor. There is also the loss of their habitat due to urban expansion. What is even worse is hunting by humans.
Reports of giraffes approaching extinction have been made since 2016, when their population decreased by 30%, and in some countries, they have already gone extinct, with at least 7 countries losing their giraffes.
Giraffe Trade
The United States has become a major market for the trade of giraffe parts, and American hunters have traveled to Africa to hunt for trophies, including giraffes, which are often targeted. In 2022, it was found that giraffe parts were being imported into the United States in large quantities, and even giraffe products were being sold in significant amounts.
As a result, giraffes are becoming closer to extinction, yet people around the world are largely unaware of their situation. However, if they are classified as ‘endangered,’ it will provide them with immediate protection and help regulate the hunting of giraffes. The fees for permits would be used to fund giraffe research and conservation efforts.
