Crisis in the Kok River! “Infected Fish Found, Possible Spread to the Mekong River”

Chiang Rai – The “River for Life Association” and the Chiang Rai Provincial Fisheries Office are urgently investigating abnormal fish in the Kok River after discovering “lump-like infections” on their bodies. There are concerns that toxic substances from mining activities may be spreading toward the Mekong River, potentially impacting local communities that rely on fishing for subsistence.

The first fish sample collection took place on April 28, 2025, at Sop Kham, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, followed by a second round on May 3–4 near Chiang Rai’s downstream weir in Mueang District. The affected fish species, known locally as Pla Khae—a deep-water fish—showed signs of possible infection. All samples were sent for laboratory testing for diseases and heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium. Results are expected within 2–3 weeks.

The situation may be more serious than initially expected, as similar abnormal fish have now been found in the northern part of the Mekong River, near the Golden Triangle, possibly due to the flow of contaminated water or fish migration.

The association is urging the Thai government to initiate four-party international talks involving Thailand, Myanmar, local ethnic armed groups, and China to regulate the release of toxic substances. If regulation is not feasible, it recommends halting mining operations altogether.

River for Life Association’s 3-Phase Response Plan:

  • Immediate Phase: Inspect contaminants in the Kok River and its tributaries.
  • Mid-Term Phase: Expand inspections to the Mekong River and 28 creeks.
  • Long-Term Phase: Include the Ing, Kham, and Ngao Rivers to prepare factual communication with affected communities.
