Climate change is now outdated — we've entered the era of “Climate Whiplash,” with weather becoming more extreme and unpredictable than ever.

Climate Change is a familiar term that anyone who hears it knows is the cause of global warming, creating great variability in the world. But now there is something more serious: “Climate Whiplash”, an extreme, unpredictable swing of air that creates a severe impact.

In January 2025, a new report stated that researchers ranked cities around the world that are at high risk of flooding and drought. It was found that some of the world’s large cities are facing dangerous climate change during the dry and rainy seasons. Some cities have to face extreme changes from dry areas to flood-prone areas.

From analyzing such severe changes, according to The Guardian, it is expected that the massive fires in Los Angeles are an example of “Climate Whiplash” because before and after the fires there was heavy rain.

Rapid climate change in wet and dry conditions may be more dangerous to people than climate change in recent years.

According to the research, almost every area on the planet is facing an increase in extreme climate change of between 31 and 66%, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, which is causing the temperature of the atmosphere to rise. If the world continues to warm, the severity of this change will continue.

Currently, areas that used to be dry have turned into wet areas. And conversely, areas that were once wet are becoming drier, meaning they will get more rain when it rains and more severe droughts when it dries.

The researchers say that “the rapid and increasingly rapid changes are likely to create challenges not only for water and flood management infrastructure, but also for disaster management, emergency response and public health systems that were designed to cope with the extreme weather of the 20th century (1901-2000).”

Climate whiplash is a frightening and concerning event because we were already caught up in past climate change. But now the situation is getting worse. Of course, our infrastructure may not be able to cope. The impacts could be so great that we cannot cope.
