Byron Bay Solar Train: The World’s First Fully Solar-Powered Passenger Train in Australia

Australia has made history with the Byron Bay Solar Train, the world’s first fully solar-powered passenger train, operating on a 3-kilometer route between downtown Byron Bay and North Beach.

The train is equipped with solar panels on both its carriages and station rooftops, generating more than 36 kilowatts of electricity. Power is stored in lithium-ion batteries that drive the train’s electric motors, replacing its original diesel engines. This makes the journey silent, emission-free, and more efficient, thanks to a regenerative braking system that feeds energy back into the batteries.

Any surplus power is sent back into the local electricity grid, further supporting the community’s renewable energy use. Operating 4–5 trips per day, the Byron Bay Solar Train has become a global symbol of sustainable transportation.
