Bangkok has separated the Loi Krathong pond specifically for bread krathongs, which shows that the water is really polluted! It may take up to 4 months to recover.
The Loi Krathong festival has already passed on November 15, 2024, which was a festival that received a lot of attention. This year, there was a campaign to use Krathongs made from natural materials that are easily biodegradable and do not harm the environment.
Krathongs made from natural materials that are easily biodegradable are designed in many different styles. One of the most popular Krathongs is the “bread Krathong” or the “dyed puffed rice cake Krathong”.
“Anatomy Mee Greed” posted a picture of Santiphap Park, Soi Rang Nam, on the recent Loi Krathong Day, showing an example of the impact of bread krathongs. The content stated, “At Santiphap Park, Rang Nam, they have arranged an area for floating bread krathongs so that people can clearly see how much bread krathongs can pollute the water. It’s tiring for the people at the ponds who have to say every 5 minutes, “Only bread krathongs accepted… Real krathongs, please go to another pond.” According to data from the Environmental Office at Santiphap Park in 2023, it will take 4 months to restore the water to normal.
It was also found that the krathongs made from colored puffed rice cakes, when exposed to water, would rot and float on the surface of the water, which the fish would not eat as we thought. According to the information from the Bangkok Environment Department, “Bread krathongs cause the water in closed ponds to rot, resulting in fish dying. Floating for 1 night, recovering for 4 months.”
