"Big news! PETA teams up with Born Free to campaign against pig performance shows."
‘Moo Daeng’, the Thai pygmy hippopotamus that once gained worldwide fame, is back in the spotlight as renowned conservation organizations Born Free and PETA launch a campaign urging the British public not to visit ‘Moo Daeng.’
The famous wildlife conservation organizations Born Free and PETA campaigned to stop British tourists from visiting zoos, including Khao Kheow Zoo in Thailand. Both see it as a way to make money from captive animals.
“Moo Deng”, a world-famous Thai pygmy hippo, has been visited by many foreigners. This irresistible popularity has caused PETA and Born Free to worry that the popularity of Moo Deng could threaten the well-being of endangered wildlife, as ill-mannered tourists throw bottles or objects at Moo Deng to get attention. They also said that Khao Kheow Zoo does not meet international standards and is purely profit-seeking, not breeding endangered animals for conservation.
PETA issued a statement saying, “It seems that Moo Deng will die there. Moo Deng only knows about dry pens without crops, and Moo Deng has not had the chance to experience the vastness, variety, and warmth of his true natural habitat in West Africa.”
At the same time, Born Free issued a statement and called on tourists and the public not to support captive wildlife, such as Moo Deng, but to support the conservation of their natural habitats.
