“Transparent solar panels” that could replace conventional building windows are emerging as a new innovation in 2025. This technology is being developed and tested in multiple countries around the world. It has the potential to transform urban high-rise buildings into clean energy producers—without compromising aesthetics or architectural design.
The CitySolar project from Europe has developed transparent solar panels with an impressive solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 12.3%, setting a new record in the field. This is achieved by combining organic solar cells with perovskite materials, allowing installation on building glass without sacrificing transparency.
Researchers at Michigan State University (MSU) estimate that if transparent solar panels were installed on buildings across the United States, they could meet up to 40% of the country’s energy demand—and when combined with rooftop solar panels, that number could rise to nearly 100%.
The company Onyx Solar has already installed electricity-generating glass in numerous buildings worldwide, including the American Airlines Arena in the U.S. and the Dubai Frame in the United Arab Emirates. These real-world applications demonstrate the growing feasibility of integrating transparent solar technology into modern architecture.
