“Godzilla El Niño” is a term used to describe an exceptionally intense El Niño event, in which sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean rise by 2.5°C or more above average. This phenomenon can trigger major disruptions to weather patterns across the globe.
Its impacts may include severe flooding, prolonged droughts, extreme heatwaves, wildfires, and stronger storms, while also threatening agricultural production and global food security. Because of its enormous potential to reshape weather systems worldwide, scientists and the media often compare it to “Godzilla” — a powerful monster capable of causing widespread destruction.
