In the Brdy Nature Reserve in the Czech Republic, a group of beavers has done what the government had been trying—and failing—to do for over seven years. In just a matter of days, the industrious animals built a dam that effectively retained polluted water, a project long delayed by bureaucratic and land ownership issues.
The beavers’ dam brought remarkable benefits:
Restored valuable wetlands
Naturally filtered and cleaned the water
Allowed the return of endangered species like crayfish
Thanks to their unexpected intervention, the state saved more than 30 million Czech koruna (approximately $1.2 million USD or 42 million baht) in planned infrastructure costs.
Despite the government’s plans to build a dam since 2018, no progress had been made due to red tape. Ironically, the beavers—working without budgets or permits—succeeded where humans couldn’t.
