The Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) and the Land Bridge are large-scale infrastructure projects proposed by the Thai government to connect the Gulf of Thailand with the Andaman Sea. The projects include the development of deep-sea ports, railways, highways, and logistics hubs, with the goal of positioning Thailand as a regional transportation and logistics center while reducing reliance on the Strait of Malacca.
However, the projects have also sparked widespread debate. Civil society groups, local communities, and some academics have raised concerns about their potential impacts on community rights, traditional fishing livelihoods, coastal ecosystems, and biodiversity. Many stakeholders are calling for meaningful public participation and comprehensive environmental and social impact assessments to ensure that economic development is balanced with environmental protection and the well-being of local communities.
