“West Bench Steps Up Yard Waste Collection – No Resource Left Behind!”

Unlimited Yard Waste Pickup Continues for West Bench and Sage Mesa Residents

Despite a new waste collection contract starting this June, residents of West Bench and Sage Mesa will continue to receive unlimited bi-weekly yard waste collection.

Previously, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) had informed those subscribed to a second yard waste cart (at $5/month) that the extra fee would be dropped. However, residents must return the extra cart’s number and sticker.

While the unlimited service will continue, RDOS has not yet confirmed whether there will be an additional charge. The district explained that the cost of unlimited pickup depends on yearly yard waste volumes, community feedback, and decisions made by the area director to balance service quality and cost control.

Under the new contract, the annual waste collection fee for the electoral area will rise from $154.83 to $382.94 — even in areas like Faulder that do not receive unlimited yard waste service.

Only West Bench and Sage Mesa will have unlimited pickup. Areas like Red Wing will continue to receive yard waste collection four times a year — twice in spring and twice in fall.

The changes are partly due to a new contract with Waste Connections Canada, which will use fully automated trucks that can no longer accept loose leaf bags.
