Experts Warn: Potential Tsunami Threat off Thailand’s Andaman Coast if Undersea Volcano Erupts
Geologists and the popular Thai science page “Mitr Earth” have issued a warning for residents along Thailand’s southern Andaman coast, urging increased vigilance after a series of magnitude 3.x to 5.x earthquakes were recorded offshore over the past few days.
The quakes occurred in an area where active undersea volcanoes have previously been detected. Experts believe these tremors could be early warning signs of magma movement beneath the Earth’s crust — a possible precursor to an underwater volcanic eruption.
If such an eruption were to occur, it could trigger a tsunami even more powerful than the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, experts warned.
Authorities and researchers advise residents to:
- Closely monitor earthquake updates
- Familiarize themselves with local evacuation routes
- Prepare emergency supplies in advance
While there’s no need for panic, people are urged to stay alert and be mentally and physically prepared for any unexpected scenarios — prioritizing life and safety.
