The largest glacier in the Alps is at risk of disappearing if global temperatures rise above 2 degrees Celsius, but current global warming may be dwindling the hopes of saving the glacier.
March 21, 2025, Swiss scientists said about the largest glacier in the Alps that “only part of the glacier can be preserved if global temperatures remain below 2 degrees Celsius, although the current loss of ice is inevitable.”
According to the UN (United Nations), the past three years have seen the most record loss of glaciers on record, causing glaciers around the world to disappear faster than ever before.
The “Aletsch Glacier”, the largest glacier in the Alps, is 20 kilometers long and weighs 10 billion tons. It attracts more than 1 million people a year, but its grandeur and beauty that draws tourists from all over the world are disappearing.
“It is very likely that almost all of the glacier will melt, and I really hope that the Aletsch Glacier at this altitude We may be able to save some of it.”
If the glacier were to disappear, the once beautiful glacier-covered Alps would be reduced to a deep, grey valley of ice.
But there is hope for saving the glacier. If global temperatures remain below 2 degrees Celsius, the glacier could continue to exist, albeit in a smaller size. In addition to saving the glacier, it could also significantly reduce sea level rise.
