Man Installs Solar Roof to Charge His Tesla Model 3 for Free — It Works, But Only Adds About One Mile Per Hour

A Tesla Model 3 owner decided to install a solar roof to see if he could charge his EV for free. The result? It works, but the efficiency is extremely low.

Using a portable solar panel system from Bluetti, he tested whether an EV could be charged while driving. The biggest challenges were changing sunlight angles and shadows, which made the charging rate highly inconsistent.

The setup included a 120W portable solar panel connected to a Bluetti AC200P (2kWh power station). Even a small shadow could cause a significant drop in charging performance, forcing him to constantly reposition the car for optimal sunlight.

After a full day of charging, the system only added enough power for about 7 miles of range—roughly 1 mile per hour in good sunlight. In monetary terms, that’s a saving of around $0.50 per day.

While the concept works, the system may be better suited for camping or RV use rather than daily EV charging needs.
