Did you know? Several cities in Europe are giving away free chickens to help reduce food waste.
Several European cities have been giving away free chickens to their residents for years in an effort to combat food waste, which causes methane, one of the main contributors to global warming.
At Easter 2015, the French city of Colmar began giving away free chickens to its residents. This was a pilot project launched by the city’s waste collection department in northeastern France. The project was set up specifically to address food waste.
The project has been in the works for some time, initially in collaboration with two nearby chicken farms. The motivation behind the project was the benefits of raising chickens, namely “eggs”, which will soon be seen.
The 200 or so homes that register will each receive two chickens, each of which is an ancient and indigenous breed of Poulet Rouge (Alsace chicken). Once the chickens are received, the residents are responsible for building and providing their own chicken coops, with the agreement that the Waste Control Department can randomly inspect the chickens at any time.
The project was a great success and is still ongoing. Over the years, more and more municipalities have joined the project. A total of 5,282 chickens have been distributed to the local community. Not only do they receive a large number of free eggs, but they also reduce the amount of food waste that goes into landfills. Because food waste can be used as chicken feed.
Food waste produces a large amount of methane in the atmosphere, more than any other material that is buried in landfills. This is because methane has a fast rate of decomposition, and has had an impact on global warming 80 times greater than carbon dioxide over the past 20 years.
In addition to France, Belgium also distributes chickens in several cities, with more than 2,500 families already adopting chickens. However, there are many conditions or terms for adopting chickens, such as having enough space to raise chickens and financial readiness for raising chickens.
Raising chickens is another option to reduce the amount of food waste that occurs, but it is much better not to throw away food waste in the first place.
