A report from Binghamton University in the United States warns that climate change is disrupting migration patterns of birds around the world. Many birds now arrive at their habitats either too early or too late, leaving them without available food or unable to find mates. As a result, bird populations are declining rapidly.
Data from Cornell University (2019) shows that more than 3 billion birds have disappeared since 1970, and the National Audubon Society estimates that over 389 bird species in North America could go extinct within the next 50 years.
The impacts could spread to humans, as around 5% of plant species rely on birds for pollination. A decline in bird populations may affect food production, including coffee, chocolate, and medicinal herbs.
Scientists recommend simple ways to help birds:
• Turn off lights at night to reduce light pollution.
• Provide food and water stations around homes to support migrating birds during their long journeys.
