Bangkok at Risk of Sinking by 2050 — Capital Could Disappear from the World Map

Bangkok is facing a major climate crisis, with scientists warning that by 2050, more than one-third of the city could be underwater. This could force the displacement of nearly 11 million residents.

The capital’s vulnerability stems from its low elevation, just 1.5 meters above sea level on average, combined with land subsidence of 2–3 centimeters per year.

According to a report by Climate Central, severe flooding could occur as early as the 2030s if urgent adaptation measures are not taken. Without action, Bangkok risks becoming one of the world’s cities to vanish from the map in the near future.

This crisis underscores the urgent need for climate adaptation strategies to protect lives, infrastructure, and the long-term future of Thailand’s capital.
