The flooding situation in Nan is concerning. On August 22, 2024, several areas in Nan were flooded, and many households were heavily affected. Agricultural lands were submerged, and belongings were swept away by the strong currents. Pets that couldn’t escape in time were also carried away by the floods, with some missing.
Due to continuous heavy rainfall from August 20 to 21, 2024, several districts in Nan province were flooded, including Chalerm Phra Kiat, Thung Chang, Chiang Klang, Pua, Tha Wang Pha, Ban Luang, Wiang Sa, and Na Noi. These areas were severely affected by the flooding.
At 12:30 AM on August 22, 2024, the Governor of Nan, Mr. Chaiyong Wongyai, issued a public alert via a Facebook post, stating: “I urge all residents, especially those in low-lying areas, to move their belongings to higher ground as the water levels in the Nan River and its tributaries continue to rise. Please prepare food, medicine, and drinking water. If you hear the warning signal, do not panic, as water levels will be monitored at the N1 station near the Northern Development Bridge, which is expected to exceed 8 meters.” The governor also mentioned that a kitchen has been set up to cook and distribute food to the affected residents to provide initial relief. The flash floods came rapidly, with houses being swept away by the strong currents. Over 2,000 rai of shrimp ponds were submerged, causing millions of baht in damage. Residents were unable to save their belongings in time, and vehicles were unable to pass through.
The flooding situation in the northern region is still concerning, as water levels in Chiang Rai, Phayao, and Phrae continue to rise. Residents in these four provinces are advised to prepare for evacuation and move their belongings to higher ground.
